Say the Lake District to a lot of people and their immediate image would probably be rain (the clue’s in the name) and hardy souls yomping up the hills wearing cagoules (are they even a thing anymore?)

What is often less remarked on that it is home so some stunning scenery can cheer even the most jaundiced of souls and many place where you can enjoy it to the full without even putting on your walking boots.

Still ever the realist - and someone who has spent a lot of time in Cumbria - we loaded the car with waterproofs, hats and gloves and set off for Windermere safe in the knowledge that we were booked into a hotel that came complete with leisure club to help cope with the worst the weather could throw at us...
