Votes for Women At Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry. 100 years ago women in Britain were granted the right to vote by the Representation of the People Act 1918. Women were now able to take on a more active role in public life and participate in the democratic process. Through battles hard-won by ordinary citizens, women became able to elect their leaders. To celebrate the emancipation of women to a more equal status, The Museum of Lakeland is exploring how women in Cumbria were shaped by these historical changes.
The museum offers a trail that visitors can follow of artefacts that chart the lives of Cumbrian women around this time, as well as showcasing the suffragettes in all their glory.
You can discover many of the individual stories of the women who lived in Cumbria at the time of the suffragettes including the tale of a woman who dressed in men's clothes and challenged them to wrestling matches and the orphans who were forced into domestic service.
The exhibits are immersive and people focused. You are invited to give your feedback and vote for your favourite parts of the experience afterwards.
