Langdale

During your stay with us, it is well worth your time to check out Langdale, which offers unrivalled walks and views, comprising breathtaking crags and riverside settings.

Defined by jagged peaks of Crinkle Crags, Bow Fell and the Langdale Pikes the Great Langdale is breathtaking. A fascinating thing about the Langdale landscape is that it is born out of volcanic matter, moulded and shaped by the elements over the centuries until suitable for human dwelling. On the other side of the fell is the charming Little Langdale, a pleasant pastoral valley where 18th-century slate manufacturing once took place. These days the foot of the fells is all white stone cottages and the gentle scenes of sheep grazing.

The volcanic rocks which once punctuated the landscape were used by neolithic tribes to make weaponry. Hence the landscape was once home to a large stone-age axe factory. If archeological evidence is anything to go by, it was Europe's largest.

At the entrance to Great Langdale, you can find the remnants of the villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater. Gone are the days of gunpowder manufacturing in these two settlements, these days Elterwater is your typical English country town looking over a pleasant village green.

Langdale valley stretches from Ambleside through Clappersgate, Skelwith bridge, Elterwater, Chapel Stile, and the glaciated valley of Mickleden.
