Heaton Cooper Studio

While you’re in this part of the world, why not check out some local art, starting with The Heaton Cooper Studio. Free to enter, this little studio is based in Grasmere, Ambleside.

This historic site was founded by Alfred Heaton Cooper in 1905, however, the current studio was founded a little bit later in 1938 by Cooper’s son, William. The families paintings have come to define the way the lakes are painted and drawn and the paintings have become part of the iconography of the Lake district.

There are rotating exhibitions throughout the year, in both the studio itself and the garden. The exhibitions include works from current artists and historic pieces.

It’s not just paintings on display in the gallery exhibitions, sculptures, prints, and drawings are also on show. The gallery is open and inclusive; there are spaces for children to get creative and special artist-led tutorials, looking at certain techniques.

The gallery is seen in the Lakes as the artistic counterbalance to Wordsworth’s poetry. The works of Alfred and William Heaton Cooper capture the beauty of these lands in a timeless fashion, displayed all year round on these quaint premises. For further info head over to the gallery's website.
