You can’t possibly visit this part of the world without catching at least a glimpse of the ruin of Hadrian's Wall, built to keep the wily Scots out of Rome’s empire! Hadrian’s wall is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the few chances left to experience a real relic of Roman history in Britain.
Head to Carlisle, Cumbria's capital, a city steeped in history and forgotten fables and head into the wilderness to see the old wall. The best place to see the lions share of it, is amongst the jaw-dropping scenery of Birdoswald Roman Fort, home to the longest continuous stretch of the wall still visible today. It really is a breath-taking experience to stand on these sites and know you are touching distance from a scene of such historic significance.
There are other gorgeous little towns round about to go to after, if the hustle and bustle of Carlisle is not for your tastes. Within 2 miles of Hadrian's Wall lies the small market town of Brampton. It is a quaint and quintessentially English town, offering some great walks.
Or lying just outside the Lake District border, there is Wigton, a charming combination of coastal and fell landscape, an often forgotten gem of this part of the world.
See it all for yourself!
