Nestled in luscious Town End, Grassmere, The Garden at Dove Cottage is a must see this time of year when its pathways and shrubbery are in full bloom. The Garden was an outdoor space at Dove Cottage where William and Dorothy Wandsworth would not only unwind and enjoy the great outdoors but also create some of their most celebrated works. Wandsworth described the garden as: “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found”. Tranquil, yet filled with wildflowers and plants, a trip to the garden is a great opportunity to unwind and absorb the Cumbrian nature in all its glory.
Thanks to the innovative work of Head Gardner Sally Hall, the garden is being restored to a semi-wild ‘slip of mountain.’ The side garden is being reinstated, which was where the Wandsworths grew herbs and vegetables. Sally, is giving short sessions in The Garden, allowing members of the public to explore the space and gain a richer understanding of the horticultural landscape.
The Garden tours are open every Wednesday from June 6th until the end of September. Entry is free. For more details head over to Wordsworth's website
