Design for Life - Radical Objects for Sustainability. This is a great exhibition for anyone who is interested in the concepts of sustainable living and environmental protection. Design for Life is a new exhibition by contemporary designer Stuart Walker at Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin in Coniston, Cumbria, which runs until the 6th of June.
Stuart Walker’s exhibit confronts the effects of capitalism and consumer culture on our environment and asks the question of whether or not they are sustainable. Looking closely at the impact consumerism has had on the world around us, Walker uses objects that blur the boundaries between art and design. He invites us to reflect upon the progress of our society at the expense of spirituality.
Design for Life takes place in Brantwood's Blue Gallery and throughout the house, aligning Walker’s designs with Ruskin’s philosophy on ethics, work and wealth.
A performance piece called Imitating the Dog, will be performed live during the exhibit. There will also be a series of workshops with pupils from Coniston Church of England Primary School. The kids will be working to produce a menu of canapés and dishes called “ A taste of Sustainability” which will look at how food can be cultivated responsibly with minimal environmental harm. The food will be served at the Public Forum event on Saturday the 14th of May, which will include a talk with the artist himself, who will examine the influence of John Ruskin on his work. Audience members will be invited to participate in a Q&A and an online publication will be made available towards the end, which will include photos and videos from the exhibition.
