Select work by two of Britain's most important contemporary ceramic artists are on display at Blackwell this spring until 10 July 2016
Carol McNicoll was part of the 'New Ceramics' group, along with fellow makers such as Richard Slee, introduced a radical element to ceramics in reaction to the austerity and minimalism of more traditional potters such as Bernard Leach.
Slee makes the functional unusable, and imbues his brilliantly-crafted objects with a surreal and subversive British humour. His exuberant ceramics take the rich, sometimes garish, hues of children's toys and plastic goods as the inspiration for their lustrous glaze. McNicoll's work is subversive yet, unlike Slee, often remains functional. Her use of recycled materials can be read as a reaction to, and critique of, our throwaway consumerist culture.
This exhibition and Blackwell itself really is a must see for anyone visiting the lake district this spring/summer you will not be disappointed and there's a Tea Room too what more could you ask for!
