Across England the August bank holiday signifies the end of Summer. Often a poignant time, it’s one of the last chances families get to come together, before the kids go back to school and the last of the warm weather dwindles.
As always Cumbria and the Lake District, provide the perfect setting for tourists to take a last deep breath of summer air, before the leaves start to turn and the crisp Autumn days appear.
The August bank holiday can often be a crowded, heady period, but not in the Lakes. Here, it is always tranquil and serene. Avoid the queues and the dizzy late summer rat race, by paying us a visit.
There are of course some unmissable walks to enjoy, while the weather is still pleasant. Why not take the family on a rugged, countryside adventure along the Lancaster Canal? Stretching out along 27 miles along the towpath between Lancaster and Kendal with many features and much wildlife to enjoy, it takes about two days.
If a larger body of water is more what you had in mind to feast your eyes upon, why not try The Cistercian Way? It takes 2-3 days. You walk the 33miles from Grange-over-Sands to Piel Island near Barrow-in-Furness, along the paths of the low limestone hills that fringe the northern shores of Morecambe Bay.
Whatever you decide to do with your time in the Lakes during the August bank holiday, you won’t regret choosing this idyllic corner of the world as your landscape upon which to watch the summer disappear.
