Until Sunday the 4th of August, there is a chance to see Turner’s Venice at Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin, in Coniston.
This is the first exhibition Brentwood have had that is devoted in its entirety to the genius of Turner. The focal point is of course his seminal work, Venice: the Piazetta with the Ceremony of the Doge Marrying the Sea. Featured as well is a collection of watercolours. These were painted during Turner’s 1840 visit to Venice and captures the passing of light in a single day.
Turner was fascinated by the energy of light and this was what informed much of his works. So many aspects of light are featured in his body of work. John Ruskin was so invested in Venice that he developed a close relationship with Turner, which defined so much of both parties lives.
