Catbells Lakeland Walk

Catbells walk, is a short, sharp, steep climb, rounded off by some great views of the lakes below. The walk is long enough to fill a pleasant afternoon, or indeed an invigorating morning stroll. Go around anti-clockwise as the rockier areas are easier in ascent. Going down is easier anti-clockwise as well, as the steps off the ridge provide a safer, if a slightly slow descent.

There is a small car parking area near Hawse End, providing convenient access to the site.

To begin the walk, you will want to start from the car park and follow the signpost marked "Cat Bells 1 mile".  This will lead you on to the North Ridge. Once you get around to the North Ridge, you will want to bear right onto steep steps and head straight on. There is relatively little trouble under foot until you reach the memorial stone, when it becomes trickier. Here, the easiest way up, is a path to the left of the mountain face.

In the second part of the walk, you need to continue over Skelgill Bank, where it gets interesting. This is the part of the path that requires the most care and diligence.

There are many path options as you near the top of the peak, the easiest path is on the right hand side of the face which offers a smooth hike up. It is here you will find the summit.

Carry on over the summit, and you will find Hause Gate where four paths meet. Take the option to the left and scale your way down. On reaching the bottom and the bridleway, turn left. You will have to climb again slightly to get back onto the foot of the North Ridge Road. Once you are back on this road, turn left, and then left again to return to the car park.

If you are looking for a healthy dose of fresh air, Catbells is a great walk. Go see it for yourself.
